TemperatureWise vs TempTrak: a kitchen monitor, or a hospital system

TempTrak is Cooper-Atkins' wireless system, now sold by Copeland, and it is built for healthcare. Medicines, vaccines, blood, and the kitchen that feeds the ward. It will watch a walk-in. That is not who it is priced and staffed for.

TemperatureWise is a temperature monitoring system for commercial cold rooms. The Bluetooth sensor samples every minute. Alerts escalate to a phone that keeps ringing. Detection is a proprietary mix of machine learning on the full temperature history, not just the current reading. The price is on the page.

If you are a lab shopping TempTrak against REES or SensoScientific, this is the wrong comparison. That set is a later family. This page is for a restaurant, a plant, or a cold store that just got a TempTrak quote.

What TempTrak gets right in a regulated building

TempTrak has been in hospitals for a long time. That shows up in the architecture, and some of it is genuinely good.

A local alarm you cannot ignore. One lab in our research had alarms hardwired so a TempTrak alert behaved like a smoke detector: audible alarm and a strobe. For a blood fridge at 3am in a building with staff on the floor, that is the right last resort. A phone in somebody's pocket is a different last resort. Both can be true.

A radio that was chosen for a campus, not a cafe. Copeland publishes two paths. Frequency-hopping 900 MHz, with an open-field range they put at 2,500 feet (762 m), sensor to base station only. Or the building's own Wi-Fi. Transmitters are battery powered. Probes cover a huge span, down to cryogenic figures on the specialty end.

Calibration paper that an auditor asks for by name. NIST-traceable and ISO 17025 options, certificates in the kit on some loggers. Corrective-action workflow is treated as mandatory, because in that market it is. Hosted software or software you run yourself. MX-series loggers store 64,000 readings on the device.

None of that is a toy. It is also not what a 40-seat kitchen is trying to buy.

TempTrak's default update is every 5 minutes, and users call it slow

Copeland's own pages put data capture from every 5 minutes to every 6 hours. An older technical paper says most sensors ship set to report every 5 minutes, with a faster sample only when the reading jumps hard.

That matches what operators actually say:

"We currently have TempTrak and it is super slow, our computer only updates the temperature every 5-8 minutes. I'm looking for an update maybe every 1-2 minutes. Or even real time."

Five minutes is not a dangerous gap for a loaded freezer. The physics of that, with real warming rates, is on how fast monitoring needs to check. The complaint is still real. A dashboard that sits still for five minutes feels dead, and a fast failure in a small reach-in can move in that window.

TemperatureWise Bluetooth samples every minute and writes to the record every 5. LoRa writes every 15. The cheap sensor is the fast one, because you are paying for range and battery on the other tier, not for speed.

TemperatureWise catches a failing unit before TempTrak's threshold fires

This is why you pick TemperatureWise. TempTrak fires when a reading leaves a band you set. That is the right primitive for a vaccine fridge, where the rule is the number. On a walk-in of food it is still a number crossing a line. By then the machine has already failed.

Getting a temperature alert after the machine fails is like driving with the rear-view mirror. You see the wreck. You do not see the road.

Healthcare monitoring is sold as a project: sensors, base stations, server, training, a support agreement, sometimes on-site calibration visits. There is no shop page. There is a catalogue and a conversation with IT.

That is fair at hospital scale. For a 2-to-20-site food business it means you cannot put their number next to ours in a spreadsheet until a quote lands, and quotes in that channel tend to arrive with a term.

TemperatureWise is $250 per sensor per year, with texts, calls, fleet view and history included. A small restaurant on Bluetooth is $175 up front and $750 a year for three sensors. Over five years that is about $3,925. That number is the proactive equipment-health alert, not a log that waits for the box to go warm. It does not move when you add a fourth person to the call list.

Where TemperatureWise falls short in this match-up

We do not ship a wall strobe. TempTrak can be hardwired so the room itself screams. TemperatureWise escalates to phones. If the people who must act are standing next to the box and are not holding a phone, their local alarm is better.

We do not run on your server. TempTrak offers hosted and on-site software. TemperatureWise is a cloud platform with an API. If the data is not allowed to leave the building, we are the wrong product.

We do not cover liquid nitrogen or a morgue case. Their probe list goes to temperatures we do not claim. A food walk-in is inside our range. An ultra-low freezer is a different conversation.

By default, about every 5 minutes. Copeland publishes a range from every 5 minutes to every 6 hours. Users in public threads have called the live view slow at 5 to 8 minutes and asked for 1 to 2 minutes.

TemperatureWise Bluetooth samples every minute and writes the log every 5. LoRa writes every 15. That is not a live dashboard. It is a one-minute sample going into a five-minute record. TempTrak's default is a five-minute capture, and users report the screen sitting still for five to eight.

Does TempTrak work in a walk-in freezer?

Yes. External probes run through the wall, transmitters mount outside, and the published probe range covers any food freezer. 900 MHz was chosen to cross a campus, which is more radio than a single walk-in needs.

TemperatureWise does the same job with a battery sensor in the box, Bluetooth or LoRa, and adds machine-learning detection plus phone calls that keep going. NIST-traceable calibration is available on both sides.

Can TempTrak alert more than one person?

Yes. Email, text, pager and on-screen pop-ups are in the healthcare playbook, and some sites add a hardwired sounder. What a given quote includes is not on a public price list.
