Scotsman ice machine maintenance and repair
By Vimal Bhaya, Founder and Lead Systems Architect · Last reviewed 5 November 2026
This is a continuation of Ice machine maintenance by brand, a 4-part tutorial. You are on part 2 of 4.
A Scotsman that is not making ice is usually off, full, short of water, too hot, or stopped on a code: check those first. On a Prodigy, code 1 means a long freeze and code 2 a long harvest.
Clean and sanitize about twice a year, and four times where the water is hard. Scotsman says its Clear 1 is safe on nickel-plated evaporators, and that bleach will damage them.
A Scotsman that makes no ice is usually off, full, short of water, too hot, or stopped on a code
- Power. Check: the switch is on. Should be: on, and not in a clean cycle (no C on the display).
- The bin. Check: the bin is not full and no ice is stuck in the water curtain, which makes the machine think the bin is full. Should be: room in the bin. If the bin-full light stays on with an empty bin, the ice sensors need cleaning, and a technician if that does not fix it.
- Water. Check: the valve is open, the line is not kinked, the filter is not clogged. Should be: valve open, cartridge within its date.
- The room. Check: the air and the water. Should be: air 50°F to 100°F (10°C to 38°C), water 40°F to 100°F (4°C to 38°C), pressure 20 to 80 psi on Prodigy models. Scotsman says running outside these limits voids the warranty.
- The condenser. Check: the fins and the vents. Should be: clean fins and clear air around the machine.
- The display. Check: the letter or number it shows, below. Should be: F or H while it runs.
Never chip ice out of the machine with a tool, and never keep resetting a machine that stops on the same code. Commercial ice machine repair has the general checks.
The Prodigy display tells you what the machine is doing
Shows | Means |
|---|---|
F | Freeze cycle (flashing: a freeze is pending) |
H | Harvest cycle (flashing: a manual harvest) |
B | Bin is full |
C | Clean cycle |
P | Preservation mode |
T | Test mode |
O | Off |
d | Draining the sump |
E | Self test failed |
1 | Long freeze. Flashing: retrying. Steady: shut down |
2 | Long harvest. Flashing: retrying. Steady: shut down |
3 | Slow water fill |
4 | High discharge temperature |
5 | Sump temperature sensor failure |
7 | Discharge temperature sensor failure |
8 | Short freeze, thin ice. Flashing: retrying |
Older Prodigy boards use some different letters. Scotsman's service literature page has the table for each model.
The clean: press Clean, and add Clear 1 when it asks
- The scale remover: Scotsman Clear 1, a food-grade acid. Scotsman says it is safe on all ice machines, nickel-plated evaporators included, and that the right strength is critical.
- The amount: full strength, poured in when the display blinks A d 1, on the Prodigy Elite; the rest is automatic. 5 ounces in 2.5 quarts of warm water on the CU0415, CU0715 and CU0920. Use the label inside your machine.
- The sanitizer: Scotsman's bulletin names Nu-Calgon IMS and says bleach will damage the evaporator. Sanitize more often where yeast grows.
- After the clean: on the Prodigy Elite, check the water distributor for loose scale, and clean the sump cover, the pump bracket and the curtain.
- The bin: wash its inside with the sanitizer too.
- Safety: rubber gloves and eye protection. The scale remover is an acid.
How often: about twice a year, by Scotsman's undercounter manual, and four times a year where the water is highly mineralized. The Prodigy Elite's clean light comes on every 6 months by default.
Scotsman flakers and nugget machines clean the same way, with their own amounts
A flaker makes ice on an auger inside a freezing cylinder, not on a plate, but the two jobs are the same: descale, then sanitize. Scotsman's Prodigy flaker instructions use 8 ounces of scale remover in 3 quarts of warm water, at least every 6 months, with the filters changed at the same time.
AquaPatrol filters, sized to the machine
Scotsman's AquaPatrol systems carry a polyphosphate feed against scale. The AP3-P is for cubers over 1,300 lb, so match the system to your machine's output. When to change the cartridge is on the filters page.
Scotsman's manuals are on its service site
Scotsman keeps service manuals, user manuals, cleaning sheets and bulletins on its service literature page, by model.
The Scotsman PM schedule
Task | How often | Who | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Clean and sanitize the water system | Every 6 months for most makers (Hoshizaki KM: at least yearly), or the manual's interval. More often with hard water | Trained staff or a service company | Use the cleaner and sanitizer the manual names. Never mix them |
Wash the bin | At each clean | Trained staff | With the solution the manual gives |
Throw away the first batches after a clean | At each clean | Trained staff | Ice-O-Matic says the first two batches after cleaning, and again after sanitizing |
Change the water filter cartridge | On its date or its gallons, whichever comes first | Trained staff | Write the date on the cartridge |
Check and clean the air-cooled condenser | At each clean, or as the manual says (some makers say monthly) | Trained staff, power off | Vacuum or soft brush |
Check the condenser air filter, where fitted | Twice a month (Hoshizaki KM-255BAH) | Anyone | Rinse or replace as the manual says |
SiteWise keeps the ice machine's PM on schedule and the history in one place
Hard water makes a Scotsman's clean a quarterly job, which is easy to lose track of across sites.
And the clean is one job on one machine. The same machine needs a sanitize, the bin washed, the filter changed and the condenser kept clear, each on its own interval. A kitchen or a site often has 10 to 15 machines like it, each with a list of its own. A paper checklist on the wall cannot keep that many dates, and it cannot tell anyone when one is missed.
SiteWise keeps all of it on your phone, in a free app. Yes, really free: the free plan has unlimited work orders (100 open at a time), 20 locations and 250 assets, far more than 15 machines.
Or open renergytech.com/download/sitewise on your phone.
SiteWise is a CMMS (a computerized maintenance management system): software that holds the assets, schedules the PMs, issues the work orders and keeps the history.
- The PM. Set the clean every 6 months, or the interval your manual gives. SiteWise creates the work order a set number of days before it is due, or schedules the next one from when the last was done.
- The procedure. Attach the maker's steps, with photos, to the PM, so whoever does the clean uses the right cleaner at the right amount.
- The parts. Keep cleaner, sanitizer and filter cartridges as parts with a minimum per storeroom. SiteWise reserves the parts for a planned PM 30 days ahead.
- On the phone. Technicians create, update and close work orders and PMs offline, on every plan, add photos and videos up to 30 seconds, and scan the machine's QR code to open its history.
Download the PM schedule above as a spreadsheet: ice machine PM schedule (CSV). The plans are on the SiteWise page.
