Manitowoc ice machine maintenance: cleaning, codes, filters and parts

This is part 1 of 4 in Ice machine maintenance by brand, a short guide to the four big commercial ice machine makers.
Clean and sanitize a Manitowoc every six months, with Manitowoc's own cleaner and sanitizer, never mixed. On an Indigo NXT you press CLEAN and follow the screen: the clean runs up to about 35 minutes and the sanitize about 24.
When a freeze or a harvest runs too long too often, the control stops the machine on a safety limit: 1 for a long freeze, 2 for a long harvest.
On an Indigo NXT, the screen walks you through the clean
- Get the ice off the plate. Manitowoc's manual suggests pressing the power button once the ice falls at the end of a harvest, or switching off and letting it melt. Empty the bin.
- Press CLEAN and follow the prompts on the screen. The machine drains and the clean light comes on.
- Add the cleaner when the screen asks, after about 2 minutes, at the amount on the label.
- Keep the water curtain closed. If it is open for more than 3 seconds, the cycle stops and the screen asks whether to carry on.
- Let the clean run, up to about 35 minutes.
- Press CLEAN again for the sanitize, about 24 minutes. The machine goes back to making ice by itself.
Older S and Q series machines use a clean switch and their own steps. The manual for your model comes first.
Manitowoc names its own cleaner and sanitizer, and says never to mix them
- The cleaner removes lime scale and mineral deposits. The S1000M manual gives the part number 94-0546-3. The Q210 and Q270 handbook adds 000000084, a clear metal-safe cleaner.
- The sanitizer disinfects and removes algae and slime: part 94-0565-3.
- Never mix them. Manitowoc's manual says so in those words.
- Only Manitowoc's. Its undercounter manual warns that another maker's descaler or sanitizer can cause damage the warranty does not cover.
- How often: every six months, in its S-series, Q-series and undercounter manuals.
Safety limit 1 is a long freeze, and safety limit 2 a long harvest
Manitowoc's control times every freeze and every harvest. When one runs past its limit too many times in a row, it records a safety limit and can stop the machine.
Limit | What it means | When the S1000M stops | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
Safety limit 1 | A long freeze | After 6 freezes in a row over 60 minutes | Run the six checks below, then restart once |
Safety limit 2 | A long harvest | After 500 harvests in a row over 3.5 minutes | Restart once, then call a technician |
To restart, Manitowoc's manual says to move the ICE, OFF and CLEAN switch to OFF, then back to ICE. If the machine stops again, call for service.
Manitowoc's instruction sheet for the NEO control board uses other figures. Its maximum freeze is 45 minutes: three in a row record safety limit 1, and six stop the machine. Its maximum harvest is 7 minutes, and three in a row stop it. The Indigo NXT shows its messages in words on the screen. Your model's service manual has its own numbers.
A long freeze often starts with what an owner can check: a dirty condenser, scale on the plate, a hot room or warm water. A long harvest is usually a part. Commercial ice machine repair has the checks.
Manitowoc's machines run in a set range of air, water and pressure
- Air around the machine: 35°F to 110°F (1.6°C to 43.4°C) on the S1000M.
- Water coming in: 35°F to 90°F (1.6°C to 32.2°C).
- Water pressure: 20 to 80 psi at the ice-making inlet.
- Clearance, air-cooled: the S1000M asks for 8 inches (20 cm) at the top and sides and 5 inches (13 cm) at the back.
The figures vary by model. The nameplate and the installation manual have yours.
Arctic Pure filters handle Manitowoc's water
Manitowoc's Arctic Pure Plus AR-10000-P is rated for 15,000 gallons, filters to 0.5 micron, and carries a slowly dissolving phosphate that keeps scale-forming minerals in solution. Manitowoc states a 95% average chlorine reduction. When to change it is on the filters page.
The parts owners meet, and the manual for the rest
- The water inlet valve screen. A dirty one is on Manitowoc's list of causes of poor ice. Cleaning it is a trained person's job.
- The water curtain. It has to hang closed for the machine to run and to clean.
- The condenser. Keep its fins clear on an air-cooled machine.
- The filter cartridge. On its date or its gallons.
For parts, read the model and serial number off the nameplate. Manitowoc's service manuals list the parts for each model.
The Manitowoc PM schedule
Task | How often | Who | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Clean and sanitize the water system | Every 6 months for most makers (Hoshizaki KM: at least yearly), or the manual's interval. More often with hard water | Trained staff or a service company | Use the cleaner and sanitizer the manual names. Never mix them |
Wash the bin | At each clean | Trained staff | With the solution the manual gives |
Throw away the first batches after a clean | At each clean | Trained staff | Ice-O-Matic says the first two batches after cleaning, and again after sanitizing |
Change the water filter cartridge | On its date or its gallons, whichever comes first | Trained staff | Write the date on the cartridge |
Check and clean the air-cooled condenser | At each clean, or as the manual says (some makers say monthly) | Trained staff, power off | Vacuum or soft brush |
Check the condenser air filter, where fitted | Twice a month (Hoshizaki KM-255BAH) | Anyone | Rinse or replace as the manual says |
SiteWise keeps the ice machine's PM on schedule and the history in one place
Every Manitowoc on every site gets the same clean every six months, and SiteWise keeps track of which one is next.
And the clean is one job on one machine. The same machine needs a sanitize, the bin washed, the filter changed and the condenser kept clear, each on its own interval. A kitchen or a site often has 10 to 15 machines like it, each with a list of its own. A paper checklist on the wall cannot keep that many dates, and it cannot tell anyone when one is missed.
SiteWise keeps all of it on your phone, in a free app. Yes, really free: the free plan has unlimited work orders (100 open at a time), 20 locations and 250 assets, far more than 15 machines.
Or open renergytech.com/download/sitewise on your phone.
SiteWise is a CMMS (a computerized maintenance management system): software that holds the assets, schedules the PMs, issues the work orders and keeps the history.
- The PM. Set the clean every 6 months, or the interval your manual gives. SiteWise creates the work order a set number of days before it is due, or schedules the next one from when the last was done.
- The procedure. Attach the maker's steps, with photos, to the PM, so whoever does the clean uses the right cleaner at the right amount.
- The parts. Keep cleaner, sanitizer and filter cartridges as parts with a minimum per storeroom. SiteWise reserves the parts for a planned PM 30 days ahead.
- On the phone. Technicians create, update and close work orders and PMs offline, on every plan, add photos and videos up to 30 seconds, and scan the machine's QR code to open its history.
Download the PM schedule above as a spreadsheet: ice machine PM schedule (CSV). The plans are on the SiteWise page.
