Ice-O-Matic ice machine maintenance and repair

By Vimal Bhaya, Founder and Lead Systems Architect · Last reviewed 5 November 2026

This is a continuation of Ice machine maintenance by brand, a 4-part tutorial. You are on part 4 of 4.

Clean and sanitize an Ice-O-Matic every six months, but not more than once a month. Use a nickel-safe cleaner and a nickel-safe sanitizer. Throw away the first two batches after each.

On an Elevation Series (CIM) machine, error code 7 means a water problem. The machine stopped so it would not run with no water on the plate. Hold POWER and CLEAN for 3 seconds to reset it.

Ice-O-Matic requires a nickel-safe cleaner and a nickel-safe sanitizer

Two cards. Left: a plated evaporator, nickel over copper, shown as a thin silver layer on copper. Use the cleaner your manual names, or a nickel-safe cleaner. Right: a stainless steel evaporator, as on Hoshizaki cubers. Hoshizaki says any commercial ice machine cleaner can be used, and names Scale Away and Lime-A-Way. Underneath: not sure which you have? Use the cleaner your manual names.

The Elevation clean: a harvest, CLEAN, cleaner, rinse, sanitize

Ice-O-Matic Elevation (CIM): the clean and sanitize cycle. Step 1: Empty the bin; hold POWER 3 s for a harvest. Step 2: Press CLEAN; add nickel-safe cleaner. Step 3: Rinse the cleaner out. Step 4: Sanitize with a nickel-safe sanitizer. Step 5: Make ice; throw away the first two batches.. Amounts and times vary by model; the manual is the authority.
An animated drawing of the four steps of an ice machine clean, lit one after the other. One: empty the bin and start the machine's clean cycle. Two: the acid cleaner, which the makers also call scale remover or descaler, dissolves the scale. Three: once the cleaner is rinsed out, the sanitizer kills slime, mold and bacteria. Four: wash the bin, then make ice, and throw away the first batches. Underneath, the cleaner bottle and the sanitizer bottle with a red cross between them: never mix the two.

Error code 7 means the machine found no water on the plate

Ice-O-Matic's service bulletin says a newer control board added code 7 for a water problem. The machine stops so it does not run with no water on the plate. It shows as a quick triple flash, red and yellow, over and over.

The other codes depend on which control board the machine has. Ice-O-Matic's CIM service manual, on its manuals and guides page, has the full list. Its service line is 1-800-423-3367.

An animated drawing of a cube ice machine making ice, seen from the front. In the freeze, a pump lifts water from the trough at the back to the distribution tube at the top, and the water runs down the cold evaporator plate behind the water curtain and freezes in layers, so the cubes grow thicker. Water that does not freeze runs back to the trough. In the harvest, the plate warms for a short time, the slab lets go, pushes the curtain open and falls into the bin as cubes, and the pile in the bin grows. After three harvests the pile reaches the bin control, and the machine stops until ice is taken out.

IFQ filters, changed every six months

An animated drawing of water flowing from the supply line through an ice machine water filter to the machine. The first stage catches sediment, so grit stops there. The second stage is carbon, which takes out the chlorine taste and smell. The third stage is a scale inhibitor, which keeps the minerals dissolved so they pass through instead of sticking to the plate. Many cartridges do all three in one. Change the cartridge on its date or its gallons, whichever comes first.

Ice-O-Matic's IOMQ cartridges for its IFQ systems are rated for six months. The filters page has the rest.

Ice-O-Matic's manuals are on its Service and Support page

Ice-O-Matic's Service and Support page links its manuals and guides, a parts lookup and a technician locator.

Clean and sanitize the water system
Every 6 months for most makers (Hoshizaki KM: at least yearly), or the manual's interval. More often with hard water
Trained staff or a service company
Use the cleaner and sanitizer the manual names. Never mix them
Wash the bin
At each clean

With the solution the manual gives
Throw away the first batches after a clean
At each clean

Ice-O-Matic says the first two batches after cleaning, and again after sanitizing
Change the water filter cartridge
On its date or its gallons, whichever comes first
Trained staff
Write the date on the cartridge
Check and clean the air-cooled condenser
At each clean, or as the manual says (some makers say monthly)
Trained staff, power off
Vacuum or soft brush
Check the condenser air filter, where fitted
Twice a month (Hoshizaki KM-255BAH)

Rinse or replace as the manual says

SiteWise keeps the ice machine's PM on schedule and the history in one place

Ice-O-Matic sets a floor and a ceiling: every six months, but no more than once a month. A schedule keeps you inside both.

And the clean is one job on one machine. The same machine needs a sanitize, the bin washed, the filter changed and the condenser kept clear, each on its own interval. A kitchen or a site often has 10 to 15 machines like it, each with a list of its own. A paper checklist on the wall cannot keep that many dates, and it cannot tell anyone when one is missed.

SiteWise keeps all of it on your phone, in a free app. Yes, really free: the free plan has unlimited work orders (100 open at a time), 20 locations and 250 assets, far more than 15 machines.

SiteWise is a CMMS (a computerized maintenance management system): software that holds the assets, schedules the PMs, issues the work orders and keeps the history.

An animated drawing of SiteWise handling an ice machine fault. An ice machine at a made-up site, Bar 2, shows thin cubes and a fault code. On a phone, a SiteWise work order appears: 'Ice machine, Bar 2: thin cubes', priority high, assigned to the maintenance team, with a photo. Its status moves from open to in progress to complete. Beside it, a calendar shows the next preventive maintenance, clean and sanitize every 6 months, already scheduled.

Download the PM schedule above as a spreadsheet: ice machine PM schedule (CSV). The plans are on the SiteWise page.

Common questions

How often should a Ice-O-Matic ice machine be cleaned?

Every six months, but no more than once a month, by Ice-O-Matic's cleaning instructions.

What does error code 7 mean on an Ice-O-Matic?

A water system problem on an Elevation Series machine: it stopped so it would not run with no water on the plate. The bulletin's causes are a faulty water pump, a stuck high float switch or a leaking inlet valve.

How do you reset an Ice-O-Matic ice machine?

On an Elevation Series machine, hold POWER and CLEAN together for 3 seconds. Reset once; if the code comes back, call a technician.

Does Ice-O-Matic require nickel-safe cleaner?

Yes. Ice-O-Matic requires a nickel-safe cleaner and a nickel-safe sanitizer, and warns that the wrong products can void the warranty.

Do you throw away the ice after cleaning an Ice-O-Matic?

Yes. Throw away the first two batches after cleaning, and the first two again after sanitizing.

Keep every Ice-O-Matic inside its window

SiteWise schedules the clean every six months, and never twice in a month.
