What commercial ice machine cleaning costs, in-house or by a service

By Vimal Bhaya, Founder and Lead Systems Architect · Last reviewed 5 November 2026

This is a continuation of Commercial ice machine maintenance, a 5-part tutorial. You are on part 5 of 5.

A service visit to clean and sanitize a commercial ice machine costs about $150 to $300. Published prices run from $175 to $360 a visit, and $650 for a full service with the machine taken apart.

In-house, the supplies cost about $44 for a bottle each of cleaner and sanitizer, plus your staff's time. At the twice a year most makers give, a service plan at these prices runs about $350 to $720 a year.

In-house costs less in supplies and more in time

A bottle of cleaner and one of sanitizer cover the supplies. The bigger cost is the time: emptying the bin, running the cycles, washing the bin and throwing away the first batches.

An animated drawing of the four steps of an ice machine clean, lit one after the other. One: empty the bin and start the machine's clean cycle. Two: the acid cleaner, which the makers also call scale remover or descaler, dissolves the scale. Three: once the cleaner is rinsed out, the sanitizer kills slime, mold and bacteria. Four: wash the bin, then make ice, and throw away the first batches. Underneath, the cleaner bottle and the sanitizer bottle with a red cross between them: never mix the two.

The steps are on how to clean a commercial ice machine.

A service visit should include more than the clean

A good visit covers the work your staff are least likely to do well. Ask whether the price includes:

A lease or a subscription folds the cleaning into a monthly price

Some operators lease the machine so the lessor does the maintenance. Easy Ice, for example, offers a subscription that covers twice-yearly preventive maintenance, filters, repair parts and labor, and backup ice, priced by quote. It suits a site with no one to own the job; you pay for that every month.

SiteWise keeps the ice machine's PM on schedule and the history in one place

Whoever does the clean, someone has to know it is due and see that it was done.

SiteWise is a CMMS (a computerized maintenance management system): software that holds the assets, schedules the PMs, issues the work orders and keeps the history.

An animated drawing of SiteWise handling an ice machine fault. An ice machine at a made-up site, Bar 2, shows thin cubes and a fault code. On a phone, a SiteWise work order appears: 'Ice machine, Bar 2: thin cubes', priority high, assigned to the maintenance team, with a photo. Its status moves from open to in progress to complete. Beside it, a calendar shows the next preventive maintenance, clean and sanitize every 6 months, already scheduled.

The PM reminds whoever owns the job, and the work order keeps the date, the photos and the notes on the machine's record.

Common questions

How much does it cost to have an ice machine professionally cleaned?

About $150 to $300 a visit. Published prices we found run $175 (York, PA, on a twice-yearly plan), $295 (Tampa Bay) and $360 a unit (Boh), and $650 for a full service with disassembly in New York City.

How much does it cost to clean an ice machine yourself?

About $44 in supplies for a 16-ounce bottle each of cleaner and sanitizer, at Walmart's prices on 5 November 2026, plus about an hour of the machine's time and your staff's.

How often should a commercial ice machine be professionally cleaned?

Most makers set every six months, and Hoshizaki at least once a year for its KM cubers. They do not require a professional. Staff can do it with the manual and the right products, and a service can do every other clean.

Does an ice machine lease include cleaning?

Often, yes. Easy Ice's subscription, for example, includes twice-yearly preventive maintenance, filters, and repair parts and labor. Check the contract for how many visits it covers.
